| | Computer Layout
I own several computers on a small network. This topic tracks the network layout, function, and operating systems of each machine. In addition, the specifications of each machine are recorded here. |
| | Network layout |
|
< < | The network is currently only one segment. This runs off an 8-port 10/100 Mbit switch in my room. The hub connects via uplink to the WRT-54G router. |
> > | The network is split into two segments connected via wireless. In the living room a TrendNet? TEW-625BRP router connects to the cable modem and provides wireless N coverage to the apartment, as well as a wired link to a DLink gigabit switch. All of the equipment in the living room area that uses a wired connection is attached to this switch. |
| | |
|
< < | Future plans call for an 8-port 10/100/1000 Mbit switch with most machines running at 100 Mbit. The main file server will have a Gigabit NIC allowing multiple machines to access it at their maximum bandwidths. Six tape processing machines and Dauntless or Intrepid will initially be connected to this switch which will also link to the 10/100 hub. These plans hinge on a Cassette to MP3 conversion deal. |
> > | In my bedroom a TrendNet? TEW-430APB connects a DLink 10/100 switch to the main network. A network attached printer and multiple computers use the wired connection from the switch. There is another TEW-430APB in another room that connects one last machine to the wireless via a wired connection. |

|
< < | The computers are ordered with the oldest I've obtained first. |
| | |
|
< < | DS9
| Processor | AMD K6-2 |
| Speed | 500 Mhz |
| Memory | 314 MB |
| Hard disk | 20 GB |
| NIC Speed | 100 Mbit |
| IP Address | 192.168.0.100 |
| OS | Debian (2.4.x Kernel) |
DS9 serves as a webserver redirect for qbfreak.dyndns.org. It also hosts NightMAREbot and TWikiBot on SluggyMARE and #twiki, respectively. |
> > | Rygel
| Processor | AMD Sempron 2800+ |
| Speed | 1.6 Ghz |
| Memory | 1024 MB |
| Hard disk | 120 GB (OS) |
| | 1000 GB (Data) |
| NIC Speed | 1 Gbit |
| IP Address | 192.168.1.101 |
| OS | Windows XP |
|
| | |
|
< < | Plans: DS9 will possibly become a file and subversion server, providing a centralized location to store all my data. A larger HDD will be required. |
> > | Rygel is my primary desktop machine. It runs Windows XP Professional. |
| | |
|
< < | Dauntless
| Processor | AMD Athlon XP 3200+ |
| Speed | 3.2 Ghz |
| Memory | 1024 MB |
|
> > | Harvey
| Processor | AMD Sempron 2200+ |
| Speed | 1.6 Ghz |
| Memory | 512 MB |

| Hard disk | ?? GB |
| NIC Speed | 100 Mbit |

< < | Dauntless used to (and should) be my primary desktop machine. It dual-boots between Windows XP Professional and Fedora Core 5. Fedora Core is the primary OS and Windows XP will be removed once all documents and settings have been migrated or saved. Dauntless provides the most noise and heat of my computers and would benefit from a case designed with sound level and airflow in mind. |
> > | Harvey is currently running Debian and serving to record the sermons at my church until I can repair their PC.
Ozme Down for repairs
| Processor | AMD K6-2 |
| Speed | 500 Mhz |
| Memory | 314 MB |
| Hard disk | 20 GB |
| NIC Speed | 100 Mbit |
| IP Address | 192.168.1.100 |
| OS | Debian (2.4.x Kernel) |
|
| | |
|
< < | Plans:
- For to cassette tape conversion
- Install a Gigabit NIC
- Install larger HDD
- Set up automatic MP3 compression of incoming Wave files
- Set up automatic CD image building of MP3 files
- Migrate/save Windows XP files and settings
- Re-install Windows XP
- Possible multi-boot with Windows Vista RC1
|
> > | Sadly the hard drive bit the dust. Not sure if it's actually failing or just corrupted. I pulled all the data and have not taken the time to try and reinstall. Ozme used to serve as a webserver redirect for qbfreak.dyndns.org. It also hosted NightMAREbot and TWikiBot on SluggyMARE and #twiki, respectively. |

< < | Prometheus |
> > | Prometheus Down for repairs |
| |
| Processor | Pentium II |
| Speed | 400Mhz (?) |
| Memory | ?? MB |
|
| |
| IP Address | Unknown or DHCP |
| OS | Fedora Core 4 (5?) |
|
|
< < | Prometheus is the heart of a robotic CD/DVD burner/duplicator. It has two Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drives and a serial controlled robotic arm. Redhat's CDRTools with DVD extensions is installed, and several scripts have been written to automate disc duplication.
Plans: Prometheus needs a complete re-write of the duplication scripts, as well as the ability to accept and burn images from other machines on the network.
Defiant
| Processor | Pentium II |
| Speed | 450 Mhz |
| Memory | 128 MB |
| Hard disk | 20 GB |
| NIC Speed | 10 Mbit (?) |
| IP Address | DHCP Assigned |
| OS | Debian |
Plans: Repair power supply and install Windows Server 2003, configure as a domain controller. I'd like to use this machine to centralize my users as well as indicate where their documents are stored (DS9). Defiant may also become a DNS server.
Unnamed MicroATX?
| Processor | Intel Celeron |
| Speed | 700 Mhz |
| Memory | 256 MB (?) |
| Hard disk | ?? GB |
| NIC Speed | N/A |
| IP Address | N/A |
| OS | ?? |
This machine is in the process of being built into the shell of a bookshelf stereo system. Once completed it will serve as a network music player, complete with a remote.
Intrepid
| Processor | AMD Sempron 2200+ |
| Speed | 1.6 Ghz |
| Memory | 512 MB |
| Hard disk | 120 GB |
| NIC Speed | 100 Mbit |
| IP Address | DHCP Assigned |
| OS | Multiple |
Intrepid is currently my primary desktop machine. It multi-boots between Windows XP Professional (primary), Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista RC1. |
> > | Another victim of time, Prometheus was lent out to help someone load data from a large number of PCs. In the process all of the PC hardware was replaced. Since then the arm controller has completely died. I have not taken the time to rebuild the PC or the controller. Prometheus was the heart of a robotic CD/DVD burner/duplicator. It had three Dual Layer DVD+/-RW drives and a serial controlled robotic arm. Redhat's CDRTools with DVD extensions was installed, and several scripts were written to automate disc duplication. |
| | |
|
< < | Plans: Migrate data from Windows XP and multi-boot between Ubuntu and other GNU/Linux distributions. Possibly install AGP video card. |
> > | Plans: Prometheus needs to be rebuilt from scratch. In addition a new arm controller/interface board needs to be designed. All of the software needs to be reinstalled and all of the scripts need to be rewritten. Eventually I would like it to be able to accept jobs over the network for burning data and image files. |
